Defibrillator: What does it do?
A defibrillator is delivers a controlled electric shock to the heart when someone is in cardiac arrest. The shock will briefly stop the heart, allowing it to reset and hopefully resume a normal rhythm.
Just like switching it on and off again!
Defibrillation used alongside CPR can increase chances of survival ten times higher than CPR alone.
Defibrillator: how do I use it?
The first and most important thing to say about public access defibrillators is that ANYONE CAN USE THEM, for free.
Here is a useful video from St Johns Ambulance that shows a training defibrillator in action…

If you are unsure about using a defibrillator then book a course with Splat, we will provide you with all the knowledge and practice you need to feel confident in the event of an emergency.
Defibrillator: where are they?
If you need a defibrillator in an emergency you will be on the phone to the emergency services (999/ 112), and they will be able to tell you where the nearest device is to you.
However, we suggest you prepare yourself for an emergency situation by finding out in advance where the nearest defibrillators are to your home, place of work, and anywhere else you frequent. You can do this by spotting them when you are out and about, or you can visit Defibfinder.uk which will give you information on the 10 nearest defibrillators to the postcode you enter.
We urge you to visit this site and find out where the nearest defibrillators are to you!
If there are not any devices near your home or your place of work, then contact your local community organisation and let them know that they can get a defibrillator for FREE from the British Heart Foundation.
