🧡 What First Aid do I need???

It’s a question we get all the time!
And (sorry in advance)… there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer!

There are a few things that help make up the magic number – and don’t worry, we’ll help you figure it out.

Our team are always here to help and support you.

How Many First Aiders do I Need?

🩹 What the Rules Say

According to the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, every workplace must provide

“adequate and appropriate first-aid equipment, facilities and people so your employees can be given immediate help if they are injured or taken ill at work.”

Sounds simple enough, right?
But here’s the twist – there are no hard and fast rules about how many First Aiders you actually need.

That’s because every workplace is different.
An office full of laptops and coffee mugs? ☕ Probably low risk.
A workshop with power tools and forklifts? 🛠 Definitely a bit spicier.

So before you panic – take a breath.
We’re here to help you work it out, without the headache.

✅ The Bare Minimum Every Workplace Needs

No matter where you work, you’ll need:

  • A properly stocked first aid kit (not just a dusty box of plasters)

  • An appointed person to look after first aid bits and bobs

  • To make sure everyone knows who’s in charge of first aid and where to go if something happens

👷 A Quick Guide from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE)

Here’s what the HSE suggests:

💥 High-risk workplaces
(Think: factories, kitchens, construction, or anywhere with dangerous equipment or chemicals)

  • Up to 50 people: at least 1 trained First Aider (EFAW or FAW)

  • Over 50 people: 1 FAW-trained First Aider per 50 employees

🪴 Low-risk workplaces
(Think: offices, shops, schools)

  • 25+ employees: at least 1 trained First Aider (EFAW)

  • Over 50 employees: 1 FAW-trained First Aider per 100 people

🧩 Risk Assessing Your Workplace

Every workplace has its own quirks and hazards – so the best way to know how many First Aiders you need is to do a First Aid Needs Assessment.

Don’t panic! It’s not as scary as it sounds.
It just means looking at:

  • What accidents could happen

  • How many people are around

  • What type of work you do

  • Where your nearest emergency services are

Your goal: keep your people (and visitors!) safe, happy, and confident that someone’s got their back if things go sideways.
